Established in the year 1848, Smithfield is one of the oldest towns in the Free State and was a vital location in 1855, as the site where a peace meeting was held between Sir George Grey and the Basotho leader, Moshesh. Many of these historical moments can be revisited in the town at attractions such as the Basotho War Memorial, the Robertson War Memorial and the Carmel Missionary Station.
