Welkom – A World of Mining and More
In 1946, the Free State Province was rocked by the news that gold had been discovered on a farm approximately 160 kilometers from Bloemfontein. Just a year later, in 1947, the city of Welkom was established to support this new mining boom. Since then, Welkom has grown into one of South Africa’s most important gold, uranium, and mineral ore producers, earning it the nickname “The Circle City” due to its unique city planning and traffic circles.
Beyond its mining roots, Welkom has diversified into agriculture, steel, and lumber, and more recently, has started to gain recognition as a tourism destination. Visitors to Welkom will find plenty to see and do. For motorsport lovers, the Phakisa Freeway Grand Prix racing circuit delivers high-speed action just outside town.
Cultural and historical attractions include monuments such as the Old Indaba Bluegum Tree, the Aandek Monument, Dog Monument, Voortrekker Memorial, and the WWII Monument. The Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre offers shows and performances, while history buffs can explore the Museum of Welkom, the Gold Museum, and take immersive mine tours that reveal the rich legacy of the region’s mining era. Nature lovers can unwind at the scenic Flamingo Pan and Theronia Pan, ideal spots for bird watching and relaxation.
Welkom continues to charm visitors with its mix of entertainment, industry, heritage, and natural beauty — a city that proudly showcases its past while embracing its future.
