Port Edward – Historic Holiday Destination
Located at the point where the mighty Umtamvuna River meets the sea, Port Edward is the southernmost town on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal. This historic South African town is a popular holiday destination, attracting visitors from throughout South Africa as well as internationally – and for good reason. Holiday makers can choose from a wide range of activities, including waterskiing, jet-skiing, mountain or quad-biking, hiking, bird-watching, horse-riding and fishing, or just relaxing on a river cruise. Perhaps the thrill of searching the beautiful sun-drenched beaches for lost treasure from sunken ships appeals to you.
Port Edward offers a real get-away-from-it-all atmosphere, while at the same time offering all of life’s modern conveniences. Accommodation is plentiful and varied to suit virtually any budget, with visitors having a choice of self-catering accommodation, bed& breakfast establishments, guest houses and luxury lodges, as well as 4 and 5 star hotels. The nearby Wild Coast Sun Casino beckons those who want to court Lady Luck in an atmosphere of glitz and glamour, while the adventurous at heart will find a number of exciting water sport options available to them.
Port Edward started off as a settlement known as Kennington, named after one of the early residents, and was later renamed in honor of the Prince of Wales at the time, who later became the King of the England and British dominions in 1936. Among the attractions of the area around Port Edward are the coffee estates that grew from the first plantings way back in 1866 and continue to thrive today. The hill overlooking the town is known as Tragedy Hill, referring to a battle fought and lost by Henry Fynn and his followers against Zulu warriors.
Clearly Port Edward has plenty to offer holidaymakers – sun, sea, surf, history, nature, adventure and more. So why not make Port Edward your next holiday destination.
