Venda – Ancient Tradition and Culture

The area known as Venda, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, has traditionally been the home of the Venda people who are believed to have traveled from the Great Lakes of Central Africa in the 12th century. Changes in South Africa’s political system over the years and historic conflicts with rival tribes have not had a lastingly negative impact on Venda or its people, a fact which is attributed to their strength of character and strong cultural identity. Visitors to Venda have the opportunity of learning more about the history, culture and lifestyle of these fascinating people, while at the same time enjoying the natural beauty of this region, which is often referred to as the 'Land of Legend'.

While ancient traditions are widely respected in Venda, this does not mean that people living here have not moved ahead with the times, and the University of Venda, located in Thohoyandou, offers higher education on a par with many major centers. But for tourists, it is the scenic terrain, the wildlife and the friendly people that are the main attraction of visiting Venda. Areas such as Mukhase, with its mountain streams and abundant wildlife, including lions, elephants and springbok, are popular destinations. Certainly, tourism plays an important role in the economy of Venda, and tourists will find top quality accommodation and a host of activities to ensure their visit to this lovely region of South Africa’s Limpopo Province is a memorable one.
