Butterfly World – A Living Fairytale Land
Experience the magic of Butterfly World located near the Cape Winelands town of Paarl. Just picture yourself strolling through a beautifully landscaped indoor garden, with brightly colored butterflies fluttering by as they flit from one delicate flower to the next - truly a picture of serenity and the stuff fairytales are made of.
Butterfly World in the Cape Winelands is southern Africa’s largest free flying butterfly park. Established in November 1996, this amazing attraction near Paarl has drawn many visitors eager to view these fascinating little creatures. The concept of butterfly parks was introduced in the United Kingdom and its popularity has spread through the world. Two ladies from Cape Town, Matty Pretorius and Esther van der Westhuizen, cottoned on to the idea on a visit to Malaysia, Singapore and Canada. They were so impressed with what they saw that they decided to provide South Africans with this magical experience.
The indoor garden which provides a habitat for the lovely butterflies was carefully designed with exotic plants and water features. Rounding off the serene ambiance of this tropical garden are the twittering birds who never harm the butterflies. While ambling through Butterfly World be sure to stop past the flight display house. Here you will see displays detailing the butterfly’s life cycle. There is even a chance you may see a young butterfly breaking out from its pupa. Visitors are welcome to spend as much time as they like at Butterfly World between 09:00 am and 05:00 pm in summer and 10:00 am and 4:00 pm in winter. Capture these colored beauties on film with your camera. Guides are available on request to show groups through the lush park and to provide additional information on Butterfly World‘s delicate and enchanting inhabitants.
