Stellenbosch Wineries – Discover South Africa’s Leading Wine Estates

The original Stellenbosch Wine Route was established in 1971, also known as the Stellenbosch American Express Wine Route, and is undoubtedly one of the most popular attractions in the Western Cape. Not only has the Stellenbosch American Express Wine Route promoted the wineries in the Stellenbosch area, but more than 200 wine and grape producers, for over 30 years. Most of the wineries on the Stellenbosch Wine Route, have restaurants or picnic facilities available, and with the exception of a few, offer wine tasting without appointment.

The Greater Simonsberg Route includes 28 Stellenbosch Wineries and estates. Some of the wineries featured are Ernst & Co, Zorgvliet Wines and Kanonkop Wine Estate. Ernst & Co is a family run winery, situated at the foot of the Simonsberg, with a picturesque landscape and friendly atmosphere, with exquisite wines that can be purchased at a reasonable price. Zorgvliet Wines, located in the Banhoek Valley, not only offers the visitor an inside look into a working wine farm, but has restaurants available and accommodation. Kanonkop Wine Estate became independent in 1930, as prior to this date it had formed part of the farm Uitkyk. It is rich in beautiful, scenic views and history.

Stellenbosch Berg Route has 26 wineries, vineyards and estates to visit on its route. Lanzerac Wines was established in 1958 and consisted of a wine farm and hotel. In later years, the homestead became a luxury manor. The Lanzerac Wines are located in Jonkershoek Valley. Near the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, lies Graceland Vineyards. This estate offers tennis courts, golf and a swimming pool, to name a few.

The Ernie Els Wines are part of the 38 Helderberg Route Wineries. This winery combines good wines together with good golf. Together with Rust en Vrede Wine Estates, the Ernie Els Wines are dedicated to excellence and quality. The Helderberg Mountains are home to Longridge Winery with spectacular views of False Bay. This winery has won many local and international awards.

There are 32 wineries on the Stellenbosch Hills Route, including the House of JC le Roux. This is one on South Africa’s most recognized leader in sparkling wines. On the Welmoed farm, established in 1690 by Simon van der Stel. Welmoed Winery has won both gold and double gold Veritas awards, for their famous Sauvignon Blanc Reserve.

The unique stone architecture of the Fort Simon Wine Estate is an unforgettable experience for the visitor. Located at Bottelary Hills, it forms part of the 21 estates on the Bottelary Hills Route. With Mooiplaas and many others, this route will also inspire you with immaculate views, and breathtaking scenery.
