Strand – One of the Best Swimming Areas in South Africa
Along with Somerset West and Gordon’s Bay, the seaside resort town of Strand forms part of the picturesque Helderberg Basin. Situated on the shores of False Bay, with the Hottentots-Holland Mountains as a backdrop, Strand’s five kilometers of beach has the reputation of being one of the best swimming areas in South Africa. With its huge tidal pool, water slides and mini-golf, as well as surfing, sailing, power boating, boardsailing and paddle-skiing on offer, Strand is a popular leisure destination.
Strand started off as a small fishing village and holiday resort and while new apartment blocks have been built to accommodate the many rat-race refugees flocking to the coast for some rest and relaxation, this lovely town has not lost its small-town charm. Tourism is Strand’s primary source of income and the level of hospitality and service is top-notch. Strand offers easy access to the Cape Winelands and other attractions, and should the weather prove to be inclement visitors can spend some time at the nearby Somerset Mall shopping center. The stretch of coastline between Strand and Hermanus is renowned for its whale watching opportunities. There is no doubt that Strand is a lovely town in its own right, and is an excellent choice as a base for exploring the surrounding areas.
