BIG WATER ON THE VAAL

Fortune smiled on the Taranto family when the heavens opened and the Vaal River in South Africa flowed big and strong on 29 December. Overnight, the river grew to ten times its flow the day before - from down at around 25 cubic metres a second to a great (though not flooding) 250 cumecs. The result was an awesome trip. Big bouncy rapids, scary but safe (because deep with no major holes) produced our best trip of the summer so far. We can expect more good rains judging from the longterm forecasts.
