We ran two trips over the Christmas 2009 weekend - on different routes, the upper and lower Parys sections - and this video has been assembled to show the best of both. The Vaal is a river of moods as it winds and pounds its way through the Vredefort Dome. By turns it's angry, placid, humorous, colourful and energetic. The many islands of the Vaal give it a special character, as the wildlife on the video shows. There's plenty more video on disk memory, as the two groups shown here got their fill of sun and exercise with the camera rolling most of the time. The river was just below medium for summer, good fun, and it's now rising to its summer high. With more rain expected things can only get better. January-February are usually the high water months.
