Ranger, Chris Herbst talks about a Leopard Tortoise during a Safari Game Drive at the Thanda Nani Game Lodge located on a 7,000 ha Private Game Reserve 10 minutes East along the N4 from the Malelane entrance to the Kruger National Park, South Africa. The Leopard Tortoise is a large and attractively marked tortoise found in the savannas of eastern and southern Africa, from Sudan to the southern Cape. This tortoise favors semi-arid, thorny to grassland habitats, although some Leopard Tortoises have been found in rainier areas. In both very hot and very cold weather they may dwell in abandoned fox, jackal, or anteater holes. Leopard Tortoises do not dig other than to make nests in which to lay eggs. It grazes extensively upon mixed grasses. It also favors succulents and thistles. The African Leopard Tortoise typically lives 80 to 100 years. Thanda Nani Game Lodge is a 3 Star property. The reserve has a breeding program where rare and endangered species like Sable and Roan antelope are bred before being released on the main reserve, disease free buffalo also roam the reserve with over 150 white and Black Rhinos - making it the largest private collection of Rhinos in the world!
