‘The Christmas White Rose’ & ‘The Christmas Yorkshireman’ 22-12-2012

The Weather Conditions were a Photographers worst nightmare: Strong Winds, Driving Rain, you name it, they were all forecast for Saturday 22nd December 2012, when 2 steam hauled railtours converged on York for the last time this year. There were still a few people though who braved the conditions to go out and catch 2 of the last steam hauled tours of 2012. The Choice of location was paramount in this case, and I was lucky enough to avoid the strong wind, however, road traffic noise took its place during the 5043 shot, in the form of a silver Corsa and an extremely noisy Land Rover that came at the wrong moment. When I arrived at Broad Lane bridge in Frickley (just south of Moorthorpe & just west of South Elmsall), The rain was falling heavily as forecast and it was difficult to see to the other end of the mile long straight section looking south towards Thurnscoe. However, at about 1130, the rain eased slightly and the line ahead became easier to spot, and in just nice time. at 1140, running 20 minutes early, 5043 came storming round the bend in the distance, just as the afformentioned road vehicles went past on the bridge. Still subject to platform speed restrictions in some places, Moorthorpe was obviously included in this and 5043 shut off just as it hit the upgrade to Moorthorpe, to make up for this though, the driver gave a nice blast on the whistle just before the bridge. I was completely frozen to the core when 60009 eventually appeared 90 minutes later running nearly 10 minutes late, but, without platform speed restrictions, went cruising under the bridge at full line speed. Unfortunately, the rain had come on heavy again so the long shot became a little more difficult. But it came out alright in the end. This was the final outing for 2012, so what else is there to say but all the best for 2013, and bring on January 26th...
