V Blog Gauteng – Voortrekker Monument

Part of my education from Jeffrey and Prins on the history of South Africa came in the Voortrekker Monument in the Pretoria, or Tshwane, region. This is an epic granite structure that can be seen from almost anywhere in the city, built between 1937 and 1949. If only for the phenomenal view of the cityscape from the top, this is worth a visit. However you could spend a long time here gazing at the friezes that line the inside of the amphitheatre, getting your head around the hidden symbolism, and coming to terms with yet another one of the very different threads that make up the country's history. A word to the warning, the structure is 40 feet high, and it is worth going to the top - so think twice before shunning the lift in favour of the stairs.
